The Roots of Dental Fears: How Sedation Dentistry Can Help

A woman covers her mouth in fearWe’ve explained how sedation dentistry can help patients get through their treatments and procedures, but we haven’t yet analyzed why patients are afraid of their treatments. Today we’ll take a look at some of the more common dental fears that patients in Florence, SC have reported, and tell you a story of one particular patient we helped with sedation dentistry.

Most Common Dental Fears

Let’s take a look at some common dental fears:

  • Embarrassed about the condition of their teeth – Many patients have felt deep shame about letting their oral health go for so long. They also may not be looking forward to what work needs to be done.
  • Fear of gagging or choking
  • Loss of control – Not all patients appreciate that leaning back in a chair, having a dentist hover over you, and have work done where you can’t talk easily.
  • Fear of the sounds or smells of the office –  It’s true that dental offices have a certain smell, but it’s more often that patients hate that metallic whine of a dental drill or cleaning tool.

Victor’s Story

For the purposes of this story, we’ve changed the patient’s name to Victor. Victor was like anyone else in Florence, SC. He enjoyed spending time with his family and cheering on his alma mater, the West Florence Knights, on Friday night football games. However, as a child Victor needed some blood drawn during a doctor’s appointment. Let’s just say it didn’t go well, and little Victor was kicking and screaming by the time he left the doctor’s office. Since then, Victor admitted that he was afraid of needles, and only went to the doctor or dentist if absolutely necessary. He was even wary during regular cleanings and check-ups.

But one day, Victor bit down on a popsicle and shooting pain shot up his jaw. He was afflicted with some pretty bad tooth decay. After this discovery, he realized it wasn’t going away and it was time to see the dentist at Advanced Dental Center of Florence.

We recommended a root canal for Victor, and that’s when he let us know his fear of needles. We knew then that intravenous conscious sedation was out of the question. Instead, we prescribed Victor with some oral conscious sedation pills, and when the day rolled around for his appointment, he was already calm and ready to go. He sat in the chair, we applied local anesthesia, and got to work on the root canal. Victor was calm the entire time, and still able to indicate how he was feeling the whole time. We’re happy to report that Victor is doing just fine and is taking better care of his teeth.
